Noah Cyrus - I Want My Loved Ones To Go With Me

“Oh, when you feel alone in the dark
Yeah, I am wherever you are.”

Noah Cyrus has been an artist who has evolved consistently from project to project. This trajectory continues on her sophomore studio album, I WANT MY LOVED ONES TO GO WITH ME, released July 11th via RECORDS/Columbia. The album presents a brand-new version of the younger Cyrus sister, one more sure than ever of her artistic identity.

The record builds a world of introspection and self-discovery, heavily interlaced with nature-related imagery. This theme makes the record feel intimate, grounded and genuine. The lyricism is a standout element of the project throughout, particularly on tracks like the opener, “I Saw The Mountains”, “Apple Tree” and “Man In The Field”. The tracks are also composed very skilfully; “I Saw The Mountains” is especially great, with a slow, measured buildup that adds significantly to the track’s emotional impact.

The absolute best trait of the album, however, is the production. The album’s soundscape is grand, elegant and luscious; the tracks have a shimmering feel to them that gives the album a captivating nostalgic atmosphere. The folk and country elements add to the unique charm of the record, and the sweeping ambience makes every moment feel significant and resonant, which is perfect for the topical matter.

The vocal performances are gentle and graceful; accompanied by ethereal harmonies, they’re reminiscent of Lana Del Rey in some places. However, this record very much feels like something of Noah Cyrus’ very own, with plenty of personality and vulnerability. The features also contribute significantly, particularly Fleet Foxes on “Don’t Put It All On Me”.

Overall, I WANT MY LOVED ONES TO GO WITH ME is Noah Cyrus’ most cohesive and mature work to date. It’s a beautifully produced, well-written, sensitive, vulnerable record, and one of the best and most underrated singer-songwriter albums of the year so far.
