The new album by British musician Rebelski is a refined and beautiful work, reminiscent of a photo album filled with cherished memories.
Rebelski began his album trilogy back in 2023 with the release of Simplicity, followed a year later by its continuation, Monochrome. Now, in 2026, the composer presents Algorithms — the natural conclusion to this three-part journey. At its core, Algorithms is an expansive and airy record, and its complete absence of vocal elements leaves the listener alone with their thoughts, inviting quiet introspection.
Recorded in Manchester, Barcelona, and Shropshire, Algorithms stretches far beyond a purely piano-driven sound. Its instrumental palette reaches well past the keys, while the sonic landscape evolves with each composition. Throughout the album, one can hear traces of human presence, wildlife, and the surrounding world woven into the recordings.
Take the opening track, “Today”, which may initially feel mystical before unfolding into a radiant and uplifting piece. It resembles the gentle sensation of waking on a spring morning, a walk along a beach under an overcast sky, or a summer evening spent on the veranda with a cup of tea. The following track, “Sanctuary”, by contrast, carries a more dramatic and shadowed tone, evoking an autumn stroll through a park just before sunset.
Although the album might seem distant at first glance, its restraint ultimately works in its favor. This kind of music can feel like a therapeutic session of sorts, helping to untangle thoughts after a demanding day. “Roads”, for instance, could easily serve as a fitting soundtrack to a science-fiction film, while the closing track, “Waves”, occasionally hints at medieval motifs.
The true highlight of the record, however, is “Momentum” — a piece unlike anything else on the album. Driven by atmospheric synthesizers, it carries a nostalgic yet futuristic quality, reminiscent of how people in the 1980s and 1990s once imagined the technological future. The composition pulses subtly in the listener’s mind, gradually expanding over its duration and, toward the end, shimmering with vivid colors like stained glass illuminated by light.
The greatest strength of Algorithms lies in its refusal to rush. In a modern world overwhelmed by doomscrolling and the rapid consumption of information, the album offers stillness instead of urgency. It creates space for reflection, allowing images, memories, and deeply personal moments to surface before the listener’s inner eye. Yet one lingering question remains: were they ever truly there at all?
