Sabrina Song - Big Trick
Another exciting artist to watch in the indie rock scene.
Emerging singer-songwriter Sabrina Song presents the latest iteration of her signature indie rock sound on her second EP, Big Trick, her first project following her 2024 debut LP You Could Stay In One Spot, and I'd Love You The Same. The new project features six tracks, which are written and primarily produced by Song herself.
Vocally, the EP is pleasantly subtle; Sabrina Song's performances are gentle in a way that adds a degree of compelling vulnerability and sincerity to the project. This is also helped along by the lyricism, which has more than its fair share of vivid, interesting imagery which makes the EP very immersive. There’s also plenty of personality in this project – while the sound on paper isn’t the most unique, the execution feels unique enough to stand out.
The production of Big Trick is what really brings it together though. The rock-leaning instrumentals are resonant and dynamic, with some great buildups and beautifully layered vocal harmonies; the best instrumental moment is probably the post-chorus of the second track, “Lock”. The sound is clear and polished without excess, just enough to make for a very pleasant listening experience; the instrumental textures are spacey and colorful, with crisp mixes combining the instrumental layers perfectly. Structurally, the EP has a very consistent sound, with a real sense of cohesion between the songs despite the brief length of the project. It’s consistently very solid; the strongest tracks are the opener, “Background Actor”, and particularly the fifth track, “Play It Cool”.
Overall, Big Trick is a concise body of work that serves as a perfect introduction to Sabrina Song’s music. Song does very well in the writing, vocals and production alike on the EP, and that level of contribution across the board in itself also makes the project more interesting and impressive. It’s a step forward from her debut album, and a very good sign for what might come in the future.
